Setting up two-factor sign-in

Two-factor sign-in is already on for every Total Vault account. Here's how it works: your password, then a 6-digit code we email you each time you sign in.

01It's already on

There's no switch to flip and nothing to set up. Two-factor sign-in is on by default for every Total Vault account. Each time you sign in, you enter your password and then a short code we email you. That second step is automatic for everyone.

The second factor is a code we email you at sign-in. There's no authenticator app or text-message option to configure, and nothing you need to enable.

02How a sign-in works

Every time you sign in at the login page, you'll walk through these steps:

  • Enter your email and continue.
  • Enter your password.
  • We email a 6-digit code to that address. Open your inbox, then type the code in to finish signing in.

The code expires after 10 minutes. If it runs out or doesn't arrive, go Back a step and sign in again to get a fresh one.

03Skip the code on a device you trust

If you sign in often from your own computer, you don't have to fetch a code every time. On the password screen, check Skip two-factor authentication on this device for 30 days before you sign in. We'll trust that browser and let you straight in for the next 30 days.

This only affects the one browser you check it on, and only for your account. Every other device still asks for the emailed code. For the full details, see trusted devices.

04If you don't get the code

  • Check your spam or junk folder, and search for an email from Total Vault.
  • Make sure you entered the right email address on the first step.
  • Go Back and sign in again to send a new code, since the old one expires after 10 minutes.
